چکیده

Accidents are always sudden. They happen despite considerable developments in the safety techniques/warning systems, affecting not only the workers directly involved, but also the people around. This is evident from the reported article on the 15th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident, entitled: “15 years on, Chernobyl survivors relive the nightmare” by Philippe Coumarianos (Times of India, April 26, 2001). Herein, the author reports, that an estimated 15,000 to 30,000 people have died as a result of the nuclear explosion, which spewed radiation into the atmosphere equivalent to 500 times that of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. This is in direct contrast with the official figure that total fatal cases were only 29 workers.

The relative retention of strontium and calcium in human bone tissue.

The production of radiostrontium in relatively high yield from fission reactions, together with the aflinity of strontium for bone, have added to the need for a quantitative understanding of the behavior of this element in the food chain leading to human bone. The quantity of this fission product which may be maintained in the bone tissue without perceptible damage to the organism is not well d...

Effect of High Calcium Intake on Strontium Metabolism in Man.

Studies carried out with tracer doses of radiostrontium (Sr85) in man have revealed qualitative similarities but quantitative differences in metabolism of strontium and calcium (1-5). The principle of qualitative correlation between urinary excretion of calcium and of radiostrontium has been utilized in investigations of the removal of radiostrontium from man (6). It has been shown that elimina...

Determination of radiostrontium released from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant through extraction chromatography and liquid scintillation counting

Two soil samples were collected on April 18–20, 2011 at Namie town and Tomioka town, which are located 26 km northwest and 11 km south of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, respectively. A 0–1 cm soil layer was used for analysis to determine the presence of radiostrontium. The soil was ashed, acid-digested, and strontium was separated from interference with use of an extraction chromato...

Stable strontium accumulation by earthworms: a paradigm for radiostrontium interactions with its cationic analogue, calcium.

The accumulation of stable strontium and its chemical analogue calcium by four species of earthworm, representing three distinct ecophysiological groups inhabiting celestite (SrSO4)-rich natural soils, was investigated. An increase in soil strontium concentration over a four-orders-of-magnitude range was accompanied by an increase in earthworm tissue strontium concentration. In contrast, no rel...

Strontium-90 concentration measurements in human bones and teeth in Greece.

Strontium-90 concentration was measured in human bones and teeth collected in Greece during the period 1992-1996. One hundred and five bone samples, mainly cancellous bone, and 108 samples, taken from a total of 896 individual teeth were processed. Samples were classified according to the age and sex of the donors. Samples were chemically pre-treated according to a specially devised method to e...
